N-Methyl-bis(trifluoroacetamide), MBTFA is a member of the perfluoroacid anhydride family of products. MBTFA is reactive towards primary (-NH2) and secondary amines (-NRH), hydroxyl (-OH) and thiol (-SH) groups under mild and non-acidic conditions. The product derivatives and the reaction bi-products of MBTFA are volatile and stable, making it a good choice for trifluoroacetylating reagent.

Under standardized conditions, MBTFA reacts faster with amines than with alcohols, phenols or thiols. This reagent is commonly used to derivatize carbohydrates, creating volatile derivatives that are easy to analyze. Like other fluorinated acetylation reagents, MBTFA derivatives are detected by electron capture detectors (ECD) with great sensitivity.
